Radius vs Diameter: Key Differences in Geometry

A clear, visual comparison between radius and diameter, including formulas for converting between them in spheres and circles.

Radius vs Diameter: Definitions and Relationships

Two of the most fundamental measurements in spherical geometry are radius and diameter. Understanding their exact mathematical relationship is essential for solving geometry problems accurately.

Summary of Core Differences
  • Radius (r): The distance from the geometric center of the sphere to any point on its exterior boundary.
  • Diameter (d): The straight-line distance passing directly through the geometric center, connecting two opposite points on the boundary.

The Conversion Formulas

Because the diameter spans from one side of the sphere to the other through the center, it is always twice as long as the radius:

d = 2 × r  ⇔  r = d / 2
Exam Alert: Many math exams provide the diameter of a sphere instead of the radius. If you mistakenly plug diameter directly into V = 4/3 π r³ without dividing by 2 first, your calculated volume will be 8 times too large (since 2³ = 8)!
