Sphere Volume vs Surface Area: Differences, Formulas & Ratio (V/A = r/3)

By Sphere Volume Formula Editorial Team Published on September 25, 2026 Peer-Reviewed • SI & Imperial Units

Comparing Volume and Surface Area

While students sometimes confuse them, volume and surface area represent fundamentally distinct physical concepts:

  • Surface Area (A = 4πr²): A 2-dimensional measurement representing the total exterior boundary (measured in square units).
  • Volume (V = 4/3πr³): A 3-dimensional measurement representing the interior space enclosed (measured in cubic units).

The Surprising Ratio: V / A = r / 3

Dividing the volume formula by the surface area formula reveals a mathematical constant ratio:

V / A = (4/3 π r³) / (4 π r²) = r / 3

This means the volume of any sphere is always equal to its surface area multiplied by one-third of its radius: V = (A × r) / 3!
