Calculating Volume Directly From Diameter

In manufacturing, engineering, and sports equipment standards, spheres are almost always measured by their outer diameter d using calipers rather than their radius.

Deriving the Diameter Formula

We know that r = d / 2. Substituting this into the standard formula:

V = 4/3 × π × (d / 2)³

Since (d / 2)³ = d³ / 8:

V = (4/3) × π × (d³ / 8) = (4 / 24) × π × d³ = 1/6 × π × d³

Direct Example

Find the volume of a basketball with diameter d = 24 cm:

Formula: V = (1/6) × π × (24)³

24³ = 13,824 cm³

V = (1/6) × π × 13,824 = 2,304 × π ≈ 7,238.23 cm³
